About This Spot

Stepping into Fat Man’s Smokehouse BBQ in Montgomery is like arriving at the heart of southern hospitality wrapped in the smoky, savory warmth of a true barbecue haven. The vibe feels unpretentious and inviting—a casual local eatery where the pace slows down just enough for you to soak in the rich aromas and the easygoing chatter around the tables. It’s the kind of place where folks gather not only for the food but for the genuine connections sparked by shared plates and familiar flavors.

Here, the rhythm of the day unspools naturally, whether you’re sliding into a cozy seat for breakfast or dropping in during the lively lunch hour. The atmosphere leans into its roots: a little rustic, a little no-frills, with a humble sense of pride in every smoked rib and pulled pork plate served. The condiment table, dotted with an array of house sauces, invites you to experiment and find your perfect balance between Carolina sweetness and a subtle smoky bite.

What stands out beyond the meat and sides is the feeling of being welcomed by people who wear their passion plainly — not with fanfare, but through the thoughtful touches on each plate and the warm, genuine smiles behind the counter. You can tell this is a spot where recipes passed down over time meet a community’s embrace. The smoky brisket mac and cheese, the collard greens, and the classic banana pudding aren’t just dishes; they’re comforting little celebrations of tradition and care.

Whether you’re craving a slow-smoked slab of ribs without the fuss or a breakfast sandwich that hints at the day ahead, Fat Man’s offers a flavor-driven journey that feels honest and rooted in place. It’s a lunch stop that becomes a memory, a reminder that big-hearted barbecue is as much about the moments shared as it is about the meal itself.

Real BBQ and people. This is what I want in a BBQ spot! Awesome people, real, kind and their heart and passion is evident in the experience you have here.

This stop was part of our”BBQ Road Trip 2025. It is a great choice for authentic everything. Their BBQ has hints of Carolina sweetness, but mix in the spicy and you have a delicious original. Tons had plenty of smoke, great potatoes salad( sweet version) and my favorite was the Baked Beans.

On our way down from Chicago to Florida, we wanted some authentic southern bbq. Fat Man’s was the answer! The ribs were incredible, and the wings smoky and delicious. So good that no sauce was needed for both! Although there was a huge variety of sauces available. The owners are super friendly and helpful too.

Quick stop for lunch. First time for us to try it out. We lived in Texas for awhile and since we left we sure missed BBQ. This was really good. We only tried the pulled pork plate added their regular BBQ sauce and was so good. I got Mac n cheese and their camp stew as sides. Camp stew is definitely a win in my book. Atmosphere is definitely BBQ. Would definitely go back to try their other dishes and will have to try their breakfast. Oh and our food was ready so fast, no wait.

Stopped in for lunch on a drive as we passed through Montgomery and were quite pleased! Fairly busy, but not packed, around noon on the Saturday of July 4th weekend. Staff were extremely friendly and helpful, and our food was ready blisteringly fast. Indoor dining area is a bit bare bones and dim, but the extensive table of condiments, including four of their own bbq sauces, was awesome. Ordered a pulled pork plate with mac & cheese and baked beans as sides, bbq fries, and a side order of corn nuggets. The pork was great quality (especially topped with hot bbq, normal bbq, and/or white bbq sauces). The sides were good, but average. Price for everything was a bargain, though, especially for bbq!

Love this "mom & pop" style restaurant! We ordered the pulled pork plates & pulled pork sandwiches. Turnip greens, baked beans, potato salad, banana pudding, & fries for our various sides. The food was delicious & the staff were "southern friendly!" We will definitely be back when we pass near this area again

5/5 Stars – A Must-Stop Pitstop for Travelers! We are from Chicago and were driving down to Florida when we found this place and decided we had to stop. We are so glad we did! The meat was incredibly flavorful, and they offer multiple sauce options to suit any taste. We ordered the 3 rib plate, which comes with a drink (sweet tea - naturally) and a side. These were thick, meaty ribs with the perfect amount of smoke—easily some of the best we’ve had. The sides, however, were the real stars of the show: The Greens: These are the best greens we have ever had, period. Every bite had the perfect balance of heat and tenderness. Camp Stew: This was quite spectacular on its own—hearty, savory, and cooked to perfection. If you’re passing through Montgomery on I-65 or I-85, do yourself a favor and pull off for Fatman's Smokehouse BBQ. It’s phenomenal Southern BBQ that lives up to the hype!

First time trying this place the line was out the door but it moved quickly. Got the bbq plate with drink and two sides (fries and banana pudding). OMG I was not prepared for how good this was the meat alone without bbq sauce was so moist and flavorful and with the sauce. Heaven. I will be going back. It was worth every penny (which was reasonably priced to begin with) I had enough for two more meals worth at home.
